Craiova is the city where you can stroll through Romania’s most beautiful historic center, renovated in “La Belle Epoque” style, featuring 600 historical monuments of national interest. Many historical figures, such as Neagoe Basarab, Matei Basarab, Constantin Brâncoveanu, Mihai Viteazul, Tudor Vladimirescu, and Constantin Brâncuși, are connected to Craiova.
One of the most remarkable nationally significant architectural artworks in Craiova is the Jean Mihail Palace, an opulent construction named after one of the wealthiest individuals of the interwar period. The palace, built between 1898 and 1907 by architect Paul Gottereau for Constantin (Dinu) Mihail, houses the Art Museum, preserved in its glory and recently rehabilitated.
Considered one of the most beautiful civil architectural monuments in the city, the sumptuous palace embodies European eclectic architecture and French academicism, incorporating late Baroque elements. Its uniqueness lies in both rich interior and exterior ornamental architecture, the exceptional quality materials used in its design, and avant-garde facilities for that period.
